Sometimes I think that it is quite strange how our companies treat the leadership. I mean: usually you spend some years working hard for your company, you demonstrate competence, you achieve good results, you lead some successful projects and then you receive a promotion, that, normally consists of becoming a leader. Leadership is considered a sort of award, an honor that you deserve in the light of the what you did.
I said that it is strange because the leadership has nothing to do with having power but it consists of being a servant. Leadership is a matter of decision and responsibility, and not of dignity and distinction.
First of all being a leader is a personal decision and not a destiny: it is not an obligation or a burden, but it is the fruit of your free will and determination. Nobody is obliged to be a leader and leadership is not necessarily for everybody. Being a leader, in fact, means deciding to put all your energy to support the growth of other people. Leadership is not a step in your career but a service to someone else’s career. The leadership is not something for you, but something to help the career of those entrusted to you.
For this reason the leadership implies a considerable responsibility: it is not a privilege but a request to serve. Yes! I am fully convinced that being a leader is a demanding and ambitious choice because, at a certain point of your professional life, you decide that your success and gratification will come though the results and the success of others, even, frequently, someone that you didn’t choose. Sometimes the leadership requires paying more attention to other people’s problems than your own. It is hard, and, honestly, not so natural or painless.
This is why being a leader is an extraordinary and gratifying role: you receive so much from the people that are part of your team! And that’s why you don’t hit the target when you compare leadership with a trivial promotion.
